Pulparindo

I have always considered myself an adventurous eater. I was lucky to grow up in a family that valued trying restaurants that served foods from all over the world. I remember being in elementary school and doing a project about our favorite foods and all of my friends said pizza, mac and cheese, and the rest of the normal kids treat foods. However, I did my poster on fried calamari and pad see ew. That being said, I have never been one who will shy away from trying a new food. When I was given a Pulparindo candy – an extra hot and salty tamarind flavored fruit strip – I was excited to try it.

I went in being very optimistic, and I am sad to admit that I was a little bit disappointed. It wasn’t that the candy was bad, it just was genuinely not my thing. In retrospect, I should have known because I do not ever like sweet and savory snacks. I hate peanut butter and chocolate, chocolate or yogurt covered pretzels, and pretty much every sweet and savory snack that anyone has ever put in front of me. I can say that I do like the flavor of tamarind, but I just didn’t personally like the spicy and sweetness together.

After saying all of that, I would also like to say that it is always cool to try something new from a culture that is different from my own. Just because it wasn’t my ideal snack, it was still interesting to learn about and get to try a snack that is popular in Mexico!
