The other day I had the pleasure of trying a pan dulce from Vallecito in Jackson Heights. It was described to me as a sweet empanada, and I must say, it did not disappoint. I have such a sweet tooth so whenever someone offers me sweets I am happy, but this was especially good. The outside was a crispy pastry, coated with cinnamon sugar. It tasted similar to an apple pie crust. This lead me to feel as if the inside would also be fruity and gooey, but instead it was creamy, sweet, rice. I LOVE rice pudding and it tasted very similar to that to me, so I was very happy. The moral of this story is that if next Thanksgiving you begin making your desserts and forgot to buy apples, as long as you have some rice, milk and sugar in you house then you are golden.
